Things I am learning - scale dependent communities in realtime

This topic is complex, I am trying to understand the different scales and issues at each each scale....

Discuss things I care about:
1. Scale dependent systems maximize freedom

- What is a scale dependent system

++ Family minhag vs. National (behavior manifests an inherent scale)

++ The Kotel (national) vs. a Shul (designation, geographic location, defines scale)

++ Type of garbage can, per street, per neighborhood, the smaller the scale the less friction, but the service may define a scale (a truck can only fit on a street of size X)

2. Communities are a key social structure for creating scale dependent society

- local interactions create inherent scale

++ geographic closeness creates local interactions

++ shared services

3. Experts. Data science
- Communities require shared language.
- Communities that are forced to adhere to values from other communities are undermined
- Authority for a community is undermined by experts from outside the community

- Expertise was defined by behavior, now it is defined by data analytics and marketing skill

4. 'Bad actors' - undermine communities

- people who violate scale

- wielding authority on a lower scale through marketing

- data has been weaponized, a very powerful marketing tool

Distortions:
1. 'Killing grandma' 

- intent

- direct vs passive injury

++ prevention (grandma can take Ivermectin)
++ remedies available. responsibly for health. diabetes etc.

2. How to look at the data?
- Pandemic. Epidemic.
++ Flu, measles. Invading army

++ Airborne vs particle
++ Physical communicable disease, AIDS

Is it measurable? Will defining a metric of success help? I am not sure. But here are two:
1. Measure illness

- hospitalization, excess deaths

++ Sweden wins

2. Measure freedom (or measure censorship)

- should be easy to measure censorship

Animals are less social. Less stable less able to forget

Having a stable environment enables me to forget details. Enables learning.


Having a stable social network provides a location to store data and enables me to forget details. My memory is outsourced

Living alone is very fragile. Requires memorization and limits learning

Animals are less social. Less stable less able to forget.

This says that it is not language and the society it enables and the ability to abstract that enables language that is the differentiation. Rather that is the result

The difference starts from the security and enablement of forgetting. Outsourcing data storage.

הרב חיים נבון, דתיות ושמרנות

 אני מקשיב לשיחה מ2.2021 בנושא דתיות ושמרנות

נראה לי קודם כל שהרב נבון מגדיר דתיות כשמרנות, ולכן רוב השמרנים הם דתיים.

לשיטתי, יש הרבה דתיים שאינם שמרנים, דווקא כוח החידוש, כוח העצמאות הבחירה החופשית היא זה שמביא לידי בריאה ודבקות בקב״ה (ודתיות).  שמירת ההלכה, המעשית, אינה קבועה, הפעולה אינה קבועה, השפה התורנית נקראת בכל דור, בכל שעה מחדש, והיא מגדירת את הפעולה הדתית.  הפעולה המבטא אמונה בקב״ה

מי לנו גדול ממשה רבנו, ש׳שמר׳ את ההלכה הקבועה לפני כארבעים שנה, והוא היכה את הצור והוציא מים.  עובדתית, הפעולה נשמרה וגם התוצאה נשמרה, אבל משום ׳שמרנותו׳ הוא נקרא בלתי מאמין בקב״ה, יען לא האמנתם בי, ולא זכה להיכנס לארץ ישראל.  

וזה מגדיר לנו את ההבדל ביני לבין ר׳ חיים נבון, שמרנותו שומר פעולה אבל אינו ראוי לחיים בארץ ישראל, ומקטין אמונה בה׳.  ואילו לשיטתי שמרנות היא חידוש, היא חיות בארץ ישראל, והיא מטא אמונת ה׳

הקשר של שפה מגדיר הלכה

 אנחנו לומדים עם הרב רפפורט על הגדרת הסיפור על בסיס ההקשר, למשל עכשיו ראינו שו״ת המשה פיינשטיין (לא באגרות) כשהרב מסביר שתהליך גיור היא הגדרת סיםור ישראלי שהיא רצון ללמוד יציאת מצרים כדי לקבל את התורה המוגדרת על ידי נעשה ונשמע, רצון לעשות מה שילמד אחרי כן.

הרב רא״ם אומר ש׳מעמר׳ מקבל משמעות על בסיס ההקשר, כאשר הפעולה נעשית בשדה היא קיבוץ פשוט של הגדולי קרקע,  כאשר נעשית בבית היא הדבקה, פעולה יותר מעשי

מיסטיקה - mystery - תעלומה

 אני מקשיב לרב חיים נבון.  נראה לי מיסטיקה באה מהמילה mystery תעלומה.  אי ידיעה.  כאשר דבר ידוע אין מיסטיקה.  

אי ידיעה לעצמו לא מביא לידי רוחניות וקשר עם הקב״ה.  הפחד של הלא נודע לא מביאה גדלות.  היא מביאה יראה.  לא אהבה. 

אבל כל דת יש בו רעיון של יצור גדול מהפרט.  וההפרש בין הפרט ליצור היא הלא נודע.  החלק האלוקי המתוסף לפרט כאשר הוא פוגש את הלא נודע וצובר ידע.  

עוד נראה שהמיסטקן מפעיל כלי בלא נודע שאינם בר השגה כדי להשיג מטרה בנודע.   זה לעצמו לא מוזר כל כך.  למשל מתפללים בכלים לא מובנים כדי להשפיע על העולם.  אלא שלא כך התפילה אסורה שתבוא עם צפיה לתמורה. הגמרא במפורש כל המעיין סופו בא לידי כאב.  

גם נראה שאנחנו תמיד מפעילים מכשירים וכלים מכן מכונית מבלי להבין כיצד היא פעולת.   אלא שגם פה יש הבדל מהותי.  אפשר שאני לא מבין אבל אני מכיר משהו שכן מבין.  אפשר לצייר את הגרף האינפורמציה והידע.  ככל שהגרף צפוף קיימת ריבוי אינפורמציה שמזינה את התוצר של הפעולה בוא לא מובנת לי.  אבל בגרף דליל באמת זה מגי ומיסטי להאמין שהתוצר יבוא על ידי הפעלה של הלא נודע

Experts are supervised --

Thinking about why people need an expert, this is manifest in Rabbinic authority or medical authority.

Two answers I heard are, either people want the truth and believe an expert has more knowledge (in particular in a specialized field), or people want to avoid responsibility.

Given these answers I am not sure how to move forward, how to help people take control of their own life.  Clearly there is a hesitancy on both counts, but you can't tell someone to just take control, you know more than you think, or take responsibility its good for you.  Rather I believe there is something underlying the need for expert opinion.

I think the need for expert opinion, external authority, emanates from a need for feedback, supervised learning, sensory deprivation being painful people look for external feedback.

It should be possible to teach people to appreciate unsupervised learning.  Measuring the model not the target result.  Measure the information representation not the maximization of a function.
